Week 11

This week’s task is a continuation of the previous week’s work efforts. There was a large demand for the completion of the Robotics presentation board for the SNCURCS Conference and I am pleased to say it has been completed! Team members contributed screenshots of their portion of the work for imagery, assisted in writing descriptions and gave feedback for final product. I was able to contribute my screenshots of my annotated images. acm

In addition to that,  Dr. B informed myself, Daphne, Catherine and Ashlee of seed funding by Google to start an ACM Chapter on our campus. Funds are available in three different amounts: 15,000, 5,000 and 3,000. Our team is pursing the 3,000 funding because we are seeking to launch this new chapter. I have been chosen to be the team leader on this task. The chapter will have the same goal mission that are in line with ACM-W which is to advocate for STEM careers and knowledge for men and women. The proposal writing is due November 1st. All the ladies of the team will be working very closely to pursue this effort. Dr. Jin, Dr. B and Dr. C will all advise on the flow of the paper and its contents. Stay tuned to see if we are announced winners of funding!

Future Goals: Complete ACM-W proposal by due date.

Week 10

This week is prioritized by the following tasks:

  1. Register for the webinar the upcoming this Friday (Oct. 21)
    1. Summarize by taking notes
  2. Continue to apply for workshops and visitation program
    1. SNCURCS and Pipeline Conference
  3. Fresh data collection
    1. Continue testing and doumentation
  4. Continue reading efforts from Chapter 22
  5. Assemble new equipment (Grippers)

Being that the new equipment for the swarmies have arrived (the grippers, etc) the Robotics team is now ready to do physical outdoor experiments. Material on April Tags have been dispersed (i.e “Pose Estimation Using April Tags for the Picking Problem“) to each member as well as the installation package for Ubuntu. The next step is to compile common times to meet for the outdoor experiments and data collection phase.

Week 9

Week 9 served as an independent study week. North Carolina was faced with a severe Hurricane which caused the University to close for a week’s duration. However,  our instructor advised us to do the following:

  1. Check the opportunities listed by CRA-W.  The four main items on that page ordered by important for our group are –
    • The Computer Science research webinar tomorrow ( 10 / 13 ) at 7 pm. All CRA scholars should attend if their schedule permits.
    • AAAI 2017 Diversity Workshop. All CRA scholars must fill this application. A form needs to filled out under “Travel Awards” by 12 / 02.
    • The Pipeline Workshop on High Performance Computing (HPC). All CRA scholars must fill this application.  A form needs to filled out under “Travel Awards” by 11 / 28.
    • Apply for the CRA Undergraduate Researcher award. (Will be discussed during future meetings)
  2. Work on the tasks from previous week –
    • Check that  blogs are up-to-date and have relevant information.
    • Work on the new directions about object detection based on newly available book.

Week 8

Tasks this week mostly apply to CRA Scholars.

  1. We are to assist our team leaders who will in turn assist our Advisors in completing the Progress Report due on Oct 8th.
  2. Our book has been updated to a different Open CV edition. This edition requires the use of C++ language. This book is said to be more helpful in the object classifier creation process.

My tasks:

  1. Read chapter 22 of Object detection
  2. Teach my self C++. Wish me luck!

Week 7

  1. Students who can are encouraged to attend the NASA Swarmathon Meeting on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 3:00pm. The webinar will feature new grippers and discuss important tips for coding.

Dr. B has made this meeting required of CRA scholars. If one can’t make the webinar for some reason they are to contact him. I personally was not able to attend due to class, however I was informed that the webinar can be viewed online via the Swarmathon website.

2. Abstracts are due!!

Daphne,  Ashlee, Donny and myself submitted our abstract on CRA work on time. Dr. B was pleased with our work.

Week 5

Keeping up with progress and making sure progress is being made is a vital aspect in this research project. Dr. B created an easy method to document each member’s stride this far. Below is the document that was created.

My Task:

  1. Complete the project tracker document that contained 6-7 tasks which include but are not limited to administrative paper work, reading assignments and software installation. Once completed all information should be turned into team leaders.

Week 4

This week’s task include the following:

  1. Each group is to create an abstract as outlined by SNCURCS. Team leaders are responsible for submitting the abstract however each member is to give input. There was discussion as to whether each member should  submit an abstract for should it be one abstract per team. It was later decided that one per team was best.

My personal tasks:

  1. Write an abstract of my own and submit it to Daphne (team leader) for review. Anything that she likes you can keep or the group abstract.
